Art That Brings ‘Tears’ To The Eyes
Artists through the ages have sometimes torn up their canvases in despair at failing to achieve what they wished to be successful work. Not so Fizz Fieldgrass who deliberately tears into his art to create his innovative imagery.
Fizz has a solo exhibition in Art House 50’s gallery space in Steyning throughout the month of August in which his signature Déchirage work can be viewed. The term - from the French déchirer, ‘to tear’ – can be seen as something opposite to collage where instead of building up separate images to create a whole, a singular image is literally taking apart through incision, parting and peeling away. His novel technique rewarded him with being a finalist in last year’s UK Open Art Competition, gaining him a display in London’s Saatchi Gallery.
Fizz says that for him, by applying his method in creating artwork he feels he’s bringing the the historical application of the artist’s hand to digital-age image making.
Regardless of the sentiment, the results express a timeless quality in their unique visual statement.
