New!! Sussex Bowls Youth Academy
"Sussex is developing a County Youth Academy system for Bowls." Chairman Malcolm Gilbey stated. Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club is delighted to be chosen for the West Sussex base for the County Youth Academy. This ties in with the club policy of introducing bowls to young people.
This summer approximately 200 young people aged between 11 and 16 will visit the club from local schools to have taster sessions as an introduction to bowls. Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club has ten level two BowlsEngland approved coaches to train and encourage those who wish to bowl whatever their age.
Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club is also proud to have been selected to Host the Under 25’s Home International Finals on the 10th and 11th of September.
Peter Blanks, County Coach, stated a County Youth Academy will be formed to operate on a monthly basis throughout the year overseen and run by the County Coach and senior coaching staff. It would be open to the boys ,girls and Managers to attend with a view to possible representative selection on the basis that only when juniors were recommended to the Academy by their coaches would they be deemed ready for consideration.
The objective of the County Academy is to provide a structured set-up for assessing and progressing promising young bowlers through a competitive environment to both maintain their interest in the sport and give them specific achievable goals. This will also serve to show parents a planned training and development programme, to avoid any attempts to try and ‘fast-track’ their offspring too soon at the initial coaching level which can have a detrimental effect on their progress. It should give the representative managers a better vehicle for scouting potential selection material than the current method.
The Academy will be run at two age levels Junior: 8 to 14 years and Senior:15 to 18 years.
