Snowy January?

The snow in December got us all by surprise, especially older people who find it even more difficult to venture out in icy conditions.

Here are a few tips to help you to go safely through another snowy period.

• Keep your freezer well stocked or have a few tins of soup, broth or chicken stew in your cupboards. Should you be stuck at home for a few days (and this can happen to all of us!), these will come handy.

• Get yourself a plastic bottle of milk and a sliced loaf of bread and freeze them. You might not believe it but defrosted milk or bread tastes as good as fresh. If you haven’t got a freezer and don’t mind the taste, get a couple of UHT milk cartons at hand. For the bread, you can buy some of those ‘half cooked’ baguettes that will keep for a month and put them in the oven for 10 minutes when needed. That and half a dozen eggs will keep you stocked for a week!

• Keep warm, drink plenty of hot tea or coffee and make sure you have a hot meal every day.

• If you really, really have to get out, don’t go alone! If you do and you have an alarm button, wear it at all times! Unless your garden is a park, you should be within the range of the system. If you did not prepare and are stuck, ring my team and we should be able to help you with a bit of emergency shopping! For this or any information about services that could help, ring 01903 528 627.
