TS Vanguard Worthing Sea Cadets

TS Vanguard, Worthing Sea Cadets, have had an extraordinary start to the year. Most of January has been used practising for the District Drill and Piping Competition at HMS Excellent Whale Island, and the Five-a-side competition where Junior Cadet Nash received man of the Match for his work. A fantastic visit on Saturday 30th January to HMS Daring and HMS Ark Royal, was organised on our behalf by Lt Andrew Parker RN; Cadets enjoyed a rare opportunity to tour both ships, this was a welcome break from all the drill practise.

The following day the whole ships company attended at St Mary’s Church Broadwater for we had donated to us a new standard for us to parade which was blessed by Reverend Wing Man Tsang, our unit Padre.

The Royal Naval Association and the Royal British legion standards were also in attendance, along with Deputy Mayor Mrs Ann Sayers and our unit President Major Tom Wye CBE, Lt Andrew Parker RN.

The drill and piping competition was a great success with the senior boys piping team winning first place. The individuals Able Cadet Dean Harman and Ordinary Cadet William Morris coming first and second.

The unarmed guard comprising eleven Cadets and one Guard Commander, came second and the Marine Cadet Division came first in the Colour Party competition, a fantastic day of achievements.

The unit is fundraising to refurbish the “heads”, toilets to the landlubbers, to give the unit disabled access toilets as well as showering facilities, the total cost is just over £16,000. The cadets were out bag packing just before Christmas and you may have seen them and donated at Morrisons or Waitrose. A big Thank you to everyone who did - it helped raise just over £1,000 towards to the cost of the refurbishment. We are a registered charity and all donations are gratefully received.

The unit parades Wednesdays’ and Fridays’ from 18.30 to 21.15, open to boys and girls from the ages of 10 to 18. We can offer more courses and activities than most youth organisations.

We are based at 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing, the contact number is 01903236357. The unit web site is http://units.ms-sc.org/worthing/
