West Tarring Young People’s Club

The AGM / Presentation Evening was held on Tuesday June 29th and thanks to everyone who came along for the presentations. It was good to see a few parents attend but also disappointing that there were so many parents who could not be bothered to give up ninety minutes out of a whole year to come along and support the boys and the club. As usual it was left to a small group of parents to muck–in and make sure the evening was a success. Our thanks go to the parents who did attend.

The Club Shields were awarded as follows:

• The Roy Dutton Community Award - Elliot A
• The Maurice Williams Trophy – James B
• The Alex Burt Memorial Shield – Owen L
• The Leaders’ Trophy – Joe O
• The Chairman’s Trophy – Felix, George, Elliot and Matt (The junior leaders)
• The Boy of the Year Award – Joseph T

Photos from the evening will be on our website and anyone wishing to purchase a copy should let us know and we will arrange for a copy to be printed for you.

Laser Quest near Horsham is an indoor laser warriors game centre and we are looking to arrange a visit there for a small group of boys. The cost will be £5 for two twenty minute sessions and this is a saving of £2.30 off the normal price. We will go on either a Sunday or a Thursday evening and the group will be limited to 12 boys. If you wish to take part please let us know and we will give you the booking form as soon as we have arranged a date. Ages for this activity are 8-14 years

Summer holidays:
We will run our normal Tuesday evening session throughout the school holidays with the exception of Tuesday August 31st when there will not be a club session. We are also looking at a few Gamer Heaven visits during the holidays and if you are interested in taking part please let us know and we will contact you as soon as we have some dates. Once again because of transport limitations these visits are limited to small groups of boys so if you want to take part let us know ASAP.

Your contact details are important to us especially if you are involved in an accident at the club or during an off-site activity and we should always be kept up to date with any changes. Also we use the SMS message system to notify you of any changes to session times or of any activities that have not been posted on the noticeboard, so if you have a mobile phone and want to be kept informed of what’s happening please make sure we have your correct mobile number.

Basketball:
We are looking at starting again a one-hour basketball coaching session once a month of a Tuesday evening with Worthing Thunder Basketball Team captain James Brame. The session will run from 6.30- 7.30 pm and the rest of the club will operate as normal during that time. If you want to take please let us know as the sessions are best with small groups of boys.

Basketball:
The SCYP Annual Basketball tournament planned for The Triangle, Burgess Hill on Tuesday July 6th has been cancelled though lack of interest but it is hoped to hold this at a later date. Parental Help: As you know we did have plans to involve parents (mainly mums) in helping out during Tuesday evening sessions.

A number of boys voiced their dislike of this plan and they felt that many boys would not want their mum helping at the club. The management committee have taken into account the views of the club members and we have now put into place a plan with the parents that were willing to help where they will come along only when we have a situation where otherwise only one adult is available to run the session. We would like to thanks those parents that have offered their help to ensure that we can run all club sessions.

Junior Leaders:
We would remind everyone that the junior leaders give up their time to run the activities in the hall of a Tuesday evening and do so willingly. In recent weeks a few boys have acted totally irresponsibly and this has involved the junior leaders having to clear up the mess left by those boys. Please remember that we will not stand by and watch the junior leaders being taken advantage of, everyone has a copy of the club rules (which are also displayed in the entrance hall) and these will be adhered to, if anyone decides not to follow the rules then they must take the consequences as explained in the rules. We are will be adding one more boy the junior leader team during August.

Free-Fall Flying:
It was hoped to be able to offer a free-fall flying experience to club members, two minutes of free-fall is equivalent to jumping out of an aircraft at 12,000 feet. We did a trial trip during which Jake and Joseph tried it out having 2 x 2 minute sessions each (photos and video on our website) but the problems of getting a group of boys across London by underground then onto Milton Keynes would prove very difficult and added to that the cost of the flights would be fairly expensive, so we have regrettably shelved that idea.

Non-contact Boxing:
If anyone is interested in having a go at Non-contact Boxing there is a session run by Adur & Worthing Council Services at our club on Thursday evenings.
The club does not run this session, we just hire the hall, so for more details contact Mike on (01273) 263174 or see the poster on the diary page of our website.
