Worthing Horticultural Society

Formed in 1890, making Worthing Horticultural Society one of the oldest societies in Worthing. It was founded by a group of well-known business people, all of whom had an interest in many aspects of horticulture. These interests enabled the first show to be held at the Pier Pavilion in 1890.

The Society has had various venues over the years; marquees covering the Steyne Gardens, on to the Assembly Hall which used to hold a 3-day event each year and now Broadwater Green under canvass on the last Saturday in June every year.

The shows used to have many trade stands, such as Barnwell Brothers, Greenyers, Goatchers and Shopwhyke Nurseries from Chichester to name but a few, all exhibiting their speciality plants.

We now incorporate flower arranging classes in our shows supported by the Worthing Flower Club and also floristry students of Northbrook College. We have recently introduced an inter-schools growing competition, promoting healthy living and home grown vegetables, which is proving to be extremely popular.

Our shows have classes for a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, also flowers, plants and hanging baskets. There are cookery classes and classes specifically for children. There are classes which will interest just about everyone, whether novice or expert. There are prizes and cups to be won – and there is NO FEE to enter. Even if you have no interest in entering, it is a breathtaking experience to see and smell all those wonderful exhibits of flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Thinking of planting a tree? Consider:-

Conifers & Evergreens ‘take’ better in April & September

Bare root trees should be planted when dormant, Autumn through to mid March

Pot plant Hardy Trees can be planted between now & the Autumn

Historically Figs were planted in brick lined pits. Some councils banned Weeping Willows from council house gardens. Some Bamboos are sold with strong containing plastic to control vigorous root systems and avoid damage to nearby structures.

The Eucalyptus roots go way beyond its canopy, but you can cut it down to a ‘bush’ every year and it will sprout again vigorously.
