Helen Higgins
22 January to 7 May 2011
In the Studio Gallery at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.
Artist and printmaker Helen Higgins digs in to Worthing Museum’s archaeological collection and unearths finds from the St Barnabas House Hospice excavation in 2008. Here they are interpreted through a series of prints and mixed media works, exhibited alongside a number of the original treasures.
Helen’s work draws on archaeology, a discipline intimately concerned with retrieval, recording and re-assembling, in order to understand the human past.
The exhibition also showcases Helen’s work in collaboration with other museum collections and art galleries, since she graduated in Fine Art in 2007.
All prints are for sale.
Alan Tobias-Williams - Thunder & Tempest
29 January to 23 April 2011
In the Garden at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery
Discover stunning combined metal and stone sculptures with surprising recycled elements in Worthing Museum Garden this spring. They are made by Alan Tobias-Williams who cuts, welds and paints steel, drawing through the paint with an angle grinder.
Alan was first inspired as a child by his mother, a sculptor who taught him to work in stone. He then trained at the School of Visual Arts and New York University. He travelled through Europe visiting his uncle in London and studying artists such as his favourites Delacroix and Rodin. He continued his journey in North Africa to see their inspiration first hand.
His main subject is the power within. This is clearly displayed in his treatments of Bulls, Horses, Figures, Birds, and unusual abstractions. The themes you will see fuse joy, sadness, whimsy and anger.
