Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club Ltd.

In accordance with the policy of Worthing Pavilion Bowling (who are registered as a Community Amateur Sports Club) of promoting bowls to all, either young and not so young whether able body or disabled, invited some Scouts from the 8th Worthing Sea Scouts Port Troop to try their hand at bowls.

They were given the opportunity to experience lawn bowls at first hand on Saturday 14th August. The Scout leaders encourage their troop members to experience as many facets of life as possible and with this in mind they brought some Scouts to Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club even though it is the Scouts summer break.

They were welcomed to the club by a director who gave a potted history of the club and the origins of bowls. The coaches then took the Scouts to the indoor air-conditioned rinks to get used to bowls. In the first hour they were shown the principles of bowls; how to handle a bowl, the bias and weight - they soon got the feeling of the bowls. They then had a short break for a drink then returned to the rinks to play a competition for the next two hours.

The Scouts enjoyed themselves and the coaches identified some natural bowlers. The Scouts were given a hand out giving the history of both the club and bowls and a description of game of bowls to take home.

At the ends of the session the Scouts were all asked by their leader if they enjoyed the game and wanted to come again in the future - a resounding “Yes!” was the reply. Assistant Scout Leader,  Mark Scott said “it was a brilliant morning at the club.

The game is far more difficult that it seems at first glance. The level of skill required is pretty high to get the perfect bowl. Many thanks to Worthing Pavilion Bowling club for the mornings training. All the Scouts enjoyed themselves immensely and the level of competitiveness was high. All are raring to come back another day for more bowls!”
